The Grand Ladies Of Lebanon

Article by Alissa Haddad

Lebanon is extra special because her four grand ladies continue to bewitch and entrance people from all over the world with their ancient secrets and their ageless beauty. The five grand ladies referred to are her eternal cities – Beirut, Tyre, Byblos, Sidon, and Tripoli. The country may be in turmoil, but the world continues to hope that these graceful ladies will not be harmed.

The Capital

Beirut is the geographic and economic hub of the country. It strongly retains influences from the French. Foch Allenby, the Central District area is the favorite of crowds. Here you find a mix of different architecture with walls molded from yellow stone that echoes the art influenced by bygone eras of the Ottoman, French, and Italian style.

The young and old shop for trinkets at the Souk al Barghout, a flea market that draw crowds of thousands – both local shoppers and curious tourists. Here you can find jewelry, antiques, handicrafts, and paintings. The flea market is like a wonderful box that holds colorful and assorted treasures.

In the evening, people take long walks along Foch Allenby’s cobbled streets, ride their bikes, and drink cups of coffee in quaint cafes. Famous Lebanese wines overflow in the local pubs. The outdoor restaurants are teeming with diners and people revel into the night.

In the infamous Rue Minet El Hosn, people promenade in the lazy afternoons. They take the sights of interesting and fabulous facades of hotels and old buildings bearing influences of western and eastern cultures. The Rue Minet El Hosn was the stomping ground for the civil war that ravaged Beirut in 1975.

Minet El Hosn is swamped with big name hotels like Normandie, Alcazar, Phoenicia, Holiday Inn, Palm Beach, and St. George. If you go to Beirut, check out these hotels and get the best service to be found in this part of the globe.

Where East Meets West

In Tyre, marvel at the white sugar sand beach, sparkling waters, and the breathtaking sceneries, adding up to any visitors’ enjoyment of Lebanon’s beaches. Relaxing in this ancient but bustling seaside city gives you that feeling that you’re looking at the same sea famous biblical characters crossed in their ancient vessels.

Byblos is the oldest inhabited area in Lebanon, dating back 7000 years. Once a mighty province ruled by kings, it is now a busy metropolis with a flourishing trade. Byblos is an archeologist’s heaven. The old buildings and Egyptian architecture are still around to fascinate tourists with their link to a proud and ancient past.

Another must-see place is Sidon. This is the place where Noah and his family landed after the Great Flood. The romantic ruins from the Crusader Period are the Castle of Sea constructed by the Knights of St. John, while the Castle of St. Louis or Land Castle sits atop the acropolis of what was once a Phoenician stronghold.

Tripoli in Northern Lebanon draws tourists to its ancient castles and the Fortress of Saint Gilles. The fortress was built in 12 BC but was later remodeled by the Mamluks and the Ottomans. There are 45 registered historical buildings that history buffs shouldn’t miss. Tripoli was also once a ship-building center and later the hub for learning.

Lebanon – The land of unlimited talent – but limited forgiveness

Lebanon – The land of unlimited talent – but limited forgiveness

Article by Mark A Dickinson

Talent – unlimited

Everywhere you go there is unlimited talent… just look at the Lebanese list of achievers… from one of the world’s greatest CEO’s, the world’s richest man, the world’s top fashion designers, down to the home grown Lebanese franchises, the artisans, the olive oil, the soap, the graphic designers, the advertisers… a country so rich in its diversity and creativity… unmatched, unparalleled anywhere in the Middle East.

Truly a leading country in entrepreneurial spirits and the passion to do great things…

Whenever you visit a business or meet with Lebanese individuals they are bubbling with enthusiasm for their “passion”, whatever it may be. They share their dreams and their aspirations and you get caught up in a vortex of excitement and your interest is sparked. Great organizations grow and thrive, against all odds the Lebanese have the unique ability to unleash unrestrained passion for life and for growing and building.

I’ve lived in all sorts of weird and wonderful places, and visited plenty more… lived in the most sophisticated of societies, Tokyo, a marvel of human endeavor where 27 million people commune in perfect harmony; and in the simplest of dwellings on an island in Lake Victoria in the middle of East Africa (Uganda) where there was no electricity or running water… and yet that unique spirit cannot be found. Only in Lebanon…

Even more than that, if you have the patience to open the subject of politics, each and every one has the solution to bringing about peace; albeit their own answer, but everyone has one. They know what it means to cooperate and collaborate to make a business thrive. They work in multi-cultural, diverse sectarian organizations where region is never an issue. Folks from all walks of Lebanese life harmoniously working together. How is it possible that these same people don’t have the capacity or the courage to force this same ethic on the country as a whole.

Come on people. The entire population is no more than that of a big European city: 4 million or so in total… Think about it for a moment… bit cities with a similar populace have a mayor and a council of some 15 to 20 people and they look after the entire affairs.. care for the city, manage its infrastructure, promote it and highlight all its great attributes.

Lebanon has it all… the sea, mountains, archaeology, history, entertainment, amazing restaurants, sun soaked beaches… what more could you ask for?

And yet, there is one sad downfall to it all. Lebanese have not been able to translate their passion into forging a united nation. There’s just one word that’s required that could turn the entire country around:

FORGIVENESS

Learning to live together for commercial gain is no biggie. We’ve got that covered. But why can’t we do the same when it comes to living together? How come we can put aside our difference of beliefs to make a buck, but when it comes to joining hands to make a “Garden of Eden” of our amazing heritage we get stuck on the differences?

Learning to forgive is one of the most powerful of human qualities. It ranks far above the ability to make profits. Think about it for a moment.

If Lebanon were to thrive as ONE nation, how much would that enhance the opportunities? Wouldn’t it put us at the top of the “desired destinations” tree?

I happened to visit a travel agency in the UK last month and took a moment to ask about a holiday to Lebanon.. I was laughed out of the shop!

Lebanon… wake up!

We need 128 politicians to rule 4 million people? And we can’t agree on the color of black!

It’s time we stepped forward into the 21st Century and decided collectively that enough is enough. The people who are so successful should not stand for this any more. The Arab Spring is upon us… we don’t have to take this divisive nature any more. Let those creative minds step forward and be counted where it matters – in forgiving one another and living in harmony for the common good.

Fill the hotels, fill the coffers.

Fill the country with a resounding sense of the power of what can be done when humans work together to create unity. Abolish foolish disagreements over what others believe and take to heart the fact that each of us is a father, a brother a son, a mother, a sister a daughter of one of the greatest nations on earth and we will truly be unstoppable.

Next time you feel you are about to discriminate based upon differences just remember the power you can unleash by not following that old path. Think about the good that you can do by rejecting those broken tools of animosity and enmity and build a different future. One day at a time, one act at a time.

Let times of refreshing come in. Let a new wind blow. Forgive and unleash the power of the amazing capacity of cooperation and enjoy the joy of a new world…

We are all waiting with baited breath…

Look out world! Here we come…

Lebanon Hotels presents the Chouf District

Lebanon Hotels presents the Chouf District

Article by Nona Ballout

Lebanon Hotels presents the Chouf DistrictChouf referring to the Chouf region can also be spelled Shouf, Shuf or Chuf, a historic region of Lebanon, and also an administrative district of the Mount Lebanon governorate.

Situated in the South Eastern of Beirut, Lebanon capital, Chouf is made of a small coast well famous for the Christian town of Damour, and of valleys and mountains composing the Barouk Mountain western slopes. The Chouf mountain is largely populated by the Lebanese Druze community, currently led by the chief of Progressist party Walid Jumblatt staying in the Jumblatt palace in Moukhtara.

Princes of Lebanon have always lived in Chouf, like Emir Bachir Chehab II. The late constructed the famous palace of Beiteddine during the first half of the 19th century. Deir El Qamar (literally the monastery of the moon) is another old place of Chouf, located under Beiteddine.

Baakline is also a large town of Chouf. Historically it was the capital of Mount Lebanon. It is also the birthplace of Prince Fakhreddine. Emir Fakhreddine is still a Lebanese symbol among all Lebanese communutiesl. He switched his residence from Baakline to Deir El Qamar as a sign of his neutrality.

Harmony has always reigned between different religions and communities in the Chouf Mountain, in spite of some violent clashes that occurred between different religions across history, notably in the 19th century and in the Lebanese Civil War of 1975-1990.

The Chouf Mountain is well preserved and boasts a beautiful natural reserve, until now spared from the building frenzy taking place in neighboring Metn and Kesrwan regions. The Chouf Cedars Forest, directly near the Barouk Mountain is nowadays the biggest Cedars reserve in Lebanon.

The Chouf Mountain benefits each year from a lot of tourism and excusions, because of the magnificent landscapes, traditional houses, green forests, and because of the hospitality of its population.

During summer, festivals take place in the towns of Bekaata and Baaklin, and the international festival of Beiteddine is one of the most visited and sought by Lebanese and tourists alike, and in the past few years, the hotels sector has flourished in a remarkable way, knowing that the most known hotels in the region are Mir Amine Palace and Barouk Palace.

In June and July alone, the reserve receives more than fifteen thousand tourists each year, among them a number of environmentalists, who come to inspect the situation in the place and devise plans that contribute to the implementation of development projects. The Tourism Sector benefits local residents and creates a lot of job opportunities for many of them.

Hotel in Lebanon: Occupancy Rate

Lebanon Hotels occupancy rate for the Christmas – New Year Period (mostly December) has varied between 90 and 100% across the country and across Lebanon Cities.

This is a quite impressive rate, considering the world media talking about and displaying travel to Lebanon as something to restrain from for the time being.  From another perspective, considering the stability of the situation in Lebanon, the occupancy rate of hotels in Lebanon is nothing less than normal, despite the political tensions that exist in the country, like anywhere else in the world, the only difference being that in Lebanon, they are made public, like the smallest details of the personal life of political leaders.

In general, the Lebanon Hotels situation for the past year has been good, and if everything works according to the previsions, a need of 2000 to 3000 additional Hotel Rooms is required in 2011 to respond to increasing accommodation demand in Lebanon.

We are considering the possibility to make available to Lebanon Visitors what can be called as “Hostels Accommodation”, which will offer travelers to Lebanon a much cheaper option than hotels, without disregarding comfort and hotel standards.  If you are interested in that option, please reply to this post because this will show us the viability of that option, and we can make it available to our website visitors the soonest.
