The other reason, why EU is not supporting Slovakia in the efforts to get less dependent on Russian gas, is the fact, that solidarity written down in the European Treaties does not work in practice. Slovak efforts do not meet political acceptance and support of all Member States, mainly because it could possibly aggravate mutual relationships between Moscow and those countries that would support Slovakia.
On 8 September 2005, E.ON, BASF and Gazprom signed a basic agreement on the construction of a North European Gas Pipeline, which led to the establishment of the North European Gas Pipeline Company (the name of the enterprise has been changed to Nord Stream in October 2006).
That would have a destructive effect on slovak industry and the whole economy, a dramatic effect on Slovak’ life standard and serious political implication that will be discussed in a further part of this comment. Such a situation would involve Slovakia (and possibly whole EU) in a de facto energy war with Russia. Slovakia would be dependent on Western help and be forced to switch its economy to a more coal based one, which is not so efficient and far more environment polluting.
